next tuesday at 9:00 my favorite tv show returns to discovery!!!! This would be deadliest catch. For the sanity of my family I'm opening this thread so that others can share their thoughts and opinions with me.

Oh boy, so you are one of "them", lol.
It's an all right show, my dad did fishing around Iceland for about 30 years and I sort of understand his job better now that I've seen the show, of course the show is dramatized, but it's definitely similar, at least in terms of weather and water temperatures.
Now it would be cool to see a whale hunting episode, the hos is too ... crabby ... as it is.

Wildebrew,
That is interesting about your dad.i Did he fish commercially and what for?

I doubt it is dramatized. They have camera persons on the boats. The editors and producers pick the plot lines which will market the best i think. All that footage is edited well. all the stuff they do is done by them and actually happened.

It's certainly a better dose of reality than say john and eight plus kate was or that show on cbsthat was the grand dady of reality shows. you knopw the one where half naked people are dropped in exotic locales to see if they survive and who gets beat up along the way? is it called survivor?

Lol, right on both counts I am sure.
My dad was mostly cod fishing in the 60s and 70s, actually on a whaling boat in the early 80s until commercial whaling was stopped in 1987 (less oney, but much nicer for the family since it was usually a one day, or very few day, trips, isntead of 2 to 4 months), and then he moved into oil tanker work and now exploration ships, mostly where biologists go and try to evaluate the size of a given stock of cod, haddock etc.
He's never seen this show but I think I'll show it to him in the summer to see if this is anything like he experienced in the fishing business.

wildebrew,

that is fascinating. i assume your dad fished for atlantic cod versus the paciffic kind that is up in alaska? I wonder if you dad has ever been on NOAA ships, or does he just work for research vessels from Iceland.

I wwish my dad were still living. He's probably love swapping stories with yours. When I was a kid, my dad fished part time, and crewed on boats owned by rich fools.

I'm just curious, but when whales were hunted, what were they used for? I mean, food obviously, but keroseen replaced whale oil for lamps. Thank goodness I don't have to wear a whalebone corset as my great grandma probably did. Obviously, I could look this up on wicopedia, but you are a lot more interesting.

Here is an interesting story for you. Last summer we went down to Tangier island which is a tiny spoot of land in the midst of the chessapeake bay. For whatever reason I wore my deadliest catch shirt. All these old guys who were hanging around the dock started talking to me. They said "if you love that show, you understand how we live. " Without asking,my daughter, friend, and I got to go to all kinds of places tourists don't go.

Glad to see this come up.
I used to watch Axe men as well as Dirty Jobs. My grandfather was a logger, so Axe men had a similar place for me as Deadliest Catch was for Wildebrew. These shows really narrate well, without ruining the background, aka no description necessary.
Any of you all into Survivor Man and other similar stuff?
And yes, Deadliest Catch is a real Winner as far as I'm concerned, and my thoughts are with Turricane, better than the big family shows, better than the dramatized weight losing or music talent shows so popular now.

well, robozerk, here is a little known fact for you. mike rowe, who narrates, both the deadliest catch and stars in my seccond favorite show dirtiest jobs, used to work at the Maryland School for the Blind. He did some work with blind teens for his eagle scout badge. I think that's why partly those shows have such good description.

Additionally both axemen, and deadliest catch are produced by original productions. Thorn Beers, the head dude in that company only does programs about topics which interest him. Therefore, I think he wants to teach us as well as as narrate.

I never remember to watch axe men. I love that show, but since it's on history which is in a different grouping of channels on the direct tv, I just forget to go there.

With the exception of the shows I've mentioned and darn few others, I don't watch TV. As a kid, it was highly discouraged, which has carried on in to adult life.
